William Carlos Williams Point of View in “The Use of Force” In the story of “The Use of Force” you see first-hand what is going on through the doctor’s hands. The point of view is critical in the story, but pain and love is also important it makes how the doctor ticks. The story goes through many different paths for the doctor and we see it from his eyes interacting with the parents and the girl, and we never see it through their eyes. William uses first-person through the eyes of the doctor where we get to see how the doctor works is way through this difficult operation. The reason why I think Williams left out the view of the little girl is because he wanted us to make up our own story for her. The daughter was the main reason that the doctor came, so we don’t know how she felt from that right away. Also, we don’t know how she is feeling and thinking about throughout the story. When the doctor was prying the girl mouth open could’ve have been very interesting if we got the view from the girl. Maybe, Williams wanted to do this so we can make assumptions of how she really felt. We say how the doctor viewed her during the the operation. “Don’t, you’re hurting me. Let go of my hands. Let them go I tell you. Then she shrieked terrifyingly, hysterically. Stop it! Stop it! You’re killing me (Williams 3)!” At this point Williams could have showed us what kind of pain Mathilda was going through. That’s why we come in and think to ourselves what would we say as the patience. From the doctor point of view Williams is showing that the doctor almost seems like a victim of rape.
