Police brutality has been occurring since the idea of a police officer was first brought up. Officers have found many holes through the law enforcement system. This brings upon many types of misconduct and excessive force. Unfortunately, police officers are not usually held accountable for their brutality. “The Incentive Program, or the method of police chiefs using promises of contraband going to sub-departments that lack the money in the budget, gives officers more incentive to not only plant evidence to make an entire estate contraband, but it also lets them rationalize lining their own pockets” (White).

Police brutality has been around for many years, but has most recently gained attention through the cases of many such as Michael Brown and Garner. Michael Brown’s situation is a little more different than Eric. Michael was stealing a pack of cigs but as he was coming out of the store police officers were already dispatched. His partner actually got away from the police officers but as for Michael he was still being chased, Michael was chased for a while so he decided to surrender but as he surrendered the officers shot him down. It tells the story of Virgil Tibbs, a black police detective from Philadelphia, who becomes involved in a murder investigation in a racist small town in Mississippi. Phillip Colbert, a wealthy industrialist from Chicago was murdered. He was constructing a factory in Sparta and staying with his wife during construction. Police Officer Sam Wood during his motor patrol of Sparta found his body on a pavement at the front of a pathway entrance onto Main Street.
Police officers have vowed their life to protect and serve. They risk their lives every day for their communities. As the last few years have sped past us, police officers have been very aggressive with the force they use when arresting a suspect, or even people in general. According to a Texas article on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, “police officers typically use force offensively rather than defensively and do so with at least some degree of premeditation.” (Gross,2013, page 167).
On July 10, 2015 the Confederate Flag, a symbol of Confederate racism, was lowered. The racist associations with the Confederate Flag still remain today, even after its removal. Directly, the removal of this flag is caused by the nation’s disgust at the actions of one man: Dylann Roof, who entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church on June 17, 2015 and murdered nine African Americans. Although Roof’s actions led to the removal of the flag, the continuous police brutality and the way mainstream culture views African Americans led to Roof’s brutal massacre, which in turn led to the removal of the Confederate Flag.
There is a point in everyone’s life where they are scared of a police officer pulling them over. The fear is usually getting a costly ticket or taken under arrest; However, darker skinned citizens now have to worry about police brutality. Police brutality is the use of excessive and unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. Over the years, the country has been exposed to the truth about what minorities face when pulled over by a racist police officer. Most of the victims from the police mistreatment are from minority groups, therefore, race plays a key role in police brutality.
Neil Cavuto, anchorman for fox news, reported on this story on December 3, 2014. In his report, he interviews Rod Wheeler, former homicide detective, and they discuss the decision of the grand jury. This report is drastically different from the other three news sources, and was not filled with as much information. The incident of Garner was only briefly touched on and then the focus was shifted completely. Most of their discussion was about the potential rioting of citizens in New York.
The treatment many police officers have towards African Americans is unjustified. Police officers have certain protocols and rules to follow certain scenarios. This is to prevent casualties as much as possible and to protect bystanders. However, when do some of these actions go overboard? Recently, there have been many cases involving police brutality against African Americans in which some had costed their lives.
A study recently found that young Black men are nine times more likely than any other Americans to be killed by police officers (Khan 723). Encyclopedia.com defines Police Brutality as “the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose.” Police brutality is an issue that has been around since 1838, when the first police force was created in Boston, Massachusetts. However, it was not until July 13, 2013 that Black Lives Matter was created in response to George Zimmerman, whose “exceeding force” killed an unarmed 17-year-old boy, Treyvon Martin. The public debate that has been argued for many years now is whether or not police officers are right to use deadly force on unarmed black men?
This report is showing light to the communities’ response to police brutality particularly in the black communities and also their encounters with police officers. Police brutality is physical violence and great cruelty demonstrated by a police officer. Police brutality and misconduct have existed for many decades and it even has been broadcasted in news stories over America, but nothing has changed. It has happened predominantly to African Americans in lower-income states. Police officers are given slaps on the wrist for taking a life or injuring an innocent person.
Police brutality remains a common yet controversial topic around the world. Police brutality is “the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians” (thelawdictionary.org). It’s a topic that segregates communities and makes each other their enemy. Specifically, a white officer has been the enemy of the black community. Unfortunately, the tension between police and blacks grew over the past few decades.
Police Brutality is an ongoing problem and existent concern in the United States and should be resolved immediately. Law enforcement must function as an element that consists of organized and civilized officers. The presence of police brutality is becoming more of an issue as society grows. The problem posed by the illegal exercise of police power is an ongoing reality for individuals of a disfavored race, class, or sexual orientation. Police brutality must be stopped so that police do not forget who they are serving – not themselves, but the public.
Cops around the United States have been accused of racially profiling black people. This topic has been brought up by everyone around the U.S. and is very controversial. Studies have shown that the majority of deaths by police officers have been people of opposite color in America. Police brutality in America is a growing epidemic that has shown no signs of slowing down. Innocent men, women, and even children have been killed by police officers for no reason.
