Growing up in since elementary school we were always taught that police officers were placed in the streets to protect and serve. Even in children television shows when in need of help or safety 911 was the number to call. Over the years thanks to the popularity of camera phones gruesome videos of police brutality have wen viral on the internet. Which in turn has forced publications to report on these murders. Looking through the history of mankind it is evident that when one is put in to power it is most likely they will abuse this power, police officers are no different. It is no secret that the majority of the officers in North America are Caucasian, which explains why most of the victims of police brutality are of from racialized communities. The criminal justice system in Canada has failed to solve the issues regarding police brutality. Even though the government may have addressed the issues nothing has been done to prevent police brutality, negative stereotypes and racist images continue to influence the action of officers. The biggest criticism to the discriminatory practices in Canada is that the government focuses on individual acts of discrimination rather than institutional oppression like the attacks on blacks by police officers. Furthermore, when a group of people of being constantly attacked by police and their government is not doing anything to protect them retaliation is inevitable and uncontrollable. Violent protests and riots where erupted after the verdict of the Trayvon murder case, windows were smashed stores where looted and some the streets where left in ravages. Even though there is no excuse for the violent actions, this is what happens when people lose hope. Although violent protests did occur a lot of positive organized protests like the Black Lives Matter Movement emerged in both Canada and the United States. Due to the success and popularity of the Black Lives Matter Movement in the United States in July 2015 the first Black Lives Matter in Toronto happened. Not only did it attract attention it also had an overwhelming amount of Canadians from all races that participated. The dismissal of the movement on major publication outlets only continues to prove that the media is only interested in advertising negative stereotypes. Countless media outlets have painted negative images of Black Lives Matter Movement it is still growing and
