In recent years the city of Compton has built a reputation that many know as being the “most dangerous city in the world”. Why is Compton known for that? This is because the city has had many events that have lead to riots, murders and racism. The city fell and is on its way back, facing diversity, economic and racial struggle. Compton has had many things shape the city's name into a place of violence, crime and danger. The people of the city are changing it and wanting a better life for future generations. Compton founded in 1869 the city was not very large until the 1930s. From the 1930’s and until 1950 the city was only white residents and the city was very racist. The riots lead to many negative effects on the city whether it being the amount of property destroyed or the lives lost, the major one would be the black’s and white’s relationship and the way it almost became extinct. Following the riots, police brutality toward the black citizens became a problem that would lead to racial problems throughout the city. Police brutality affected the black citizens immensely. They grew hatred towards the cops and they had zero respect for them. Ice Cube known for being a rapper in the group N.W.A that formed in Compton. He lived through the police brutality. He saw the effect it had on his hometown. In an interview with People Magazine he was asked about police brutality, “ His take on the controversy over police treatment of minorities: "We got to hold these officials, authority figures and officers accountable when they break the law. No more trying to hide it, cover it up, or excuse it. The solution is, to put body cameras on all these police, and make it a federal offense to tamper, erase, or obstruct the camera and the footage. Then we'll see things start to slow down”. A view from a person who lived through it is the best way to understand how bad it was. New York Times has an article talking about the police and their use of excessive force and racial slurs against the black citizens of Compton. The article states that “ While the report said most of city's police officers worked efficiently and without excessive force, it found "a significant number" who "repetitively use excessive force against the public and persistently ignore the written guidelines of the department regarding force.” Using computerized department files on the use of force against civilians, the report said that officers accused of repeated acts of excessive force were seldom punished and were often given glowing evaluations, that police reports were routinely falsified and that civilian control was
