Police Officer Consoli: A Career As A Police Officer

Today my class had the opportunity to ask a police officer questions and based off his answers we had to determine what style of policing he was most associated with. Based on the series of questions asked and the answers Officer Consoli gave, I’d say he fits into two of the four basic styles of policing. The first style I think he fits in is The social agent. He easily fits the description of someone who is happy to work with special needs kids and school kids. In fact, when I asked him what his favorite part of being a cop was, he said talking to kids and helping them learn more and stay out of trouble. When he was asked about how he would handle a call involving a disabled individual, he said he would try to talk to them and find out why they were acting the way they were. When asked about how he would handle a first time speeding violation for an eighteen year old, he said the first time he generally just gives a warning. If the incident happened again within a short time period, he said he would most likely give out a ticket or the person would have to go to a stop class. This fits in with he fact of motorists being left alone if their driving doesn’t endanger or annoy others. It seems to me like he’s a very understanding person and he doesn’t want to have to cause problems for people if he doesn 't have to. When asked how he’d handle crimes by minors he said he’s lenient because he wants to keep everyone safe. Someone also asked him how he’d handle someone performing a crime at 18 versus someone 25. He responded with how it would depend on the extent of the crime and the damage done. If it’s something serious like the brick through the window story, he would handle both ages the same. Another factor that makes me think Officer Consoli would fit into the policing style of watchman is how he explained that cooperation will go a long way in
