Member of diverse ethnic and racial groups, particularly African Americans, believe that they are not treated with respect and believe that there is institutional racism in law enforcement. Institutionalized racism can be harmful to those impacted. For example, the use of pre-employment standardized tests claim that this kind of assessment could be biased toward people of a certain culture, so minorities tend to score lower (p. 48). Racial profiling has ended lives of innocent people. The death of Trayvon Martin is an example of racial profiling gone wrong. On February 26, 2012 Trayvon Martin went to a convenience store and proceeded to walk through a gated community while in the phone with his girlfriend. A neighborhood watchman by the name of George Zimmerman was following Martin in his car. Zimmerman had called the police saying that he felt like Martin might have been up to something.

The film portrayed the time when segregation existed between the whites and the blacks to be specific in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. On July 16, 2009, around noon, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., a black Harvard professor, was on his way home from a trip to Harvard University and had called a limousine, the driver was black. When he returned home his key wasn 't working, and both he and the driver tried to force the door open. The police were called and Dr. Gates was arrested, the story made headlines nationwide and raised the question; does law enforcement racially profile people?(Staples) This is an example of racial profiling and how it is in law enforcement. Although there is discrimination in law enforcement, many cops are not racist and do not racially profile people.
Racism exist in every race or culture there is even today. Not all people of a certain race is racist, but racism exist in every race, period. Look at the news on any given day, and you will see stories of racism even if it is not labeled racism we know it when we see it. Our country has to get over this issue that racism is only practiced with whites against other races, this is just not
Racism in America Racism can be defined as a major problem in United States history, and can be dated back to the 1400’s. Racism can be viewed and defined in many ways, but most accurately is seen as the state of characterizing an individual based on his race, and or believing that one race is superior to another (Shah) . Racism is as big of a problem in the USA as anyone can think, starting way back to when the country had just began to form, when Europeans started settling into the 13 original colonies (Shah). Ever since then, it seems that the problem has only been on the rise, rather than the opposite. Racism has always been a major issue, although hundreds of years have passed since the birth of racism, the problem just seems to never go away.
Overall, racism still exists in some way. The problem why our society thinks that racism doesn 't exist anymore is because racism isn 't expressed in a direct way today. The reason we let racism go is because we don 't realize it in the first place. Our race is built by us and it can only be diminished by us. If we overcome media each race would be respected the same and inequality wouldn 't exist as much.
But what is racism? It is an interaction in society with a race-based worldview. The newspaper The Sunday Independent published an article Racism is a pervasive poison that takes root deep in people’s hearts defining what is racism. “Racism is a deadly disease and a mental disorder which has caused many disasters, such as the Holocaust, apartheid and many wars.” (Benoni, 2011)
Racism is an evil act that can destroy a society. The U.S is a nation of immigrants and, as such, it is a diverse society where racism has no place. In the past few years police officers in America have been discriminating against the black community. Police officers are meant to protect the public, not cause further damage and stress. They use over excessive force towards black people, target minorities and abuse their power.
“ According to the National Association of Social Workers Web site, racism is “the ideology or practice through demonstrated power or perceived superiority of one group over others by reasons of race, color, ethnicity, or cultural heritage....” The definition further goes on to note that “racism is manifested at the individual, group, and institutional level.” (Blank, 2013) Despite how much time has passed by, racism continues to be a huge issue today. We see it every day, some have even been confronted by racial discrimination, or racial slurs even. We see how the system could be for example: how blacks continue to get more severe punishments or blacks have higher the chance to get criminally sentenced than whites.
“16% of traffic deaths among children ages 0 to 14 were involved in an alcohol - impaired driving acccident”.(Motor Vehicle Safety) Every year thousands of people and families are ripped apart by drunk driving. People need to make this change. The police can only arrest so many. People need to need to stop drinking under the influence of alcohol.
Racism has always existed with humans. Racism is treating someone differently of unfairly simply because they belong to a different ethnic community of have a different religion or nationality. When someone believes their race is better than another and feels superior ro other people because of his of her race, is called racism. Throughout time, many people have lost their lives, or lost their families and children, and are left without homes due to racism. Racism causes wars, which could destroy humanity ultimately.
Racism is an ever growing issue in the world, and something we can’t hide behind. According to dictionary.com the defintion of racism is: “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” Race was created socially by how people perceive ideas and faces people are not used to yet. It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. Racism is an issue that has lasted throughout history, providing justification for a group’s dominance over another.
