Law enforcement officers should only use the necessary force to mitigate a situation appropriately that ensures everyone’s safety. Officers should first have the appropriate training from the police academy. Having better officer training, would prevent excessive use of force. Every enforcement agency has some type of guide in which force should be used. The levels of force should be used in order of verbal, physical restraints, less lethal force and only use lethal force if threatened with a gun. Acknowledging officers could switch the level or continuum or force in a matter of seconds. Many of my recommendations for the appropriate use of force coincide with the recommendations for the Collaborative Reform Initiative an Assessment of Deadly Force in the Philadelphia Police Department. It is recommended that the newly established board should conduct a comprehensive review of each incident (recommendation 40.2). Preventing a deadly situation is always better than dealing with the after effect. Officers need examples of how to do things right, and what it looks like when a situation goes horribly wrong, long before they encounter civilians on the streets. If the academy included trainings such as diversity trainings, and de-escalating technique trainings, followed through with virtual reality test, it would help aide the officers in making the best decisions in a given situation. Well-trained officers are not easily swayed by verbal hostilities because they are more than likely secure with knowing they can physically handle someone when talking someone down does not work.
