The English civil war marked all kind of political change for England. The monarch was extremely limited and Parliament now held the real power and say in England post english civil war. The government before the the english civil war was almost a complete absolute monarchy. After the Civil War however the monarch was forced to sign a document limiting his own power greatly and giving the British Parliament most of it. The new political structure was The Parliament: Prime Minister on top → Cabinet under. The difference here was that the political leader was elected. Due to multiple attempted political and religious reforms as well as multiple negative confrontations with the parliament a civil war erupted. Most of the public went with the Parliament because they supported the idea of being able to choose their own leaders rather than inheritance. The enlightenment ideas were spreading rapidly throughout europe and England was not spared. Virtually the only people who supported the monarch Charles I were his own royal guard and army. It should be noted however that many mercenaries were hired on both sides who had no care as to the politics. In the end, the side of Parliament won and Charles I was forced to sign a document further limiting his own monarchy and everyone who should come after.
