Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history” (brainyquote.com). This perfectly depicts the 1970s where many different decisions effected our current world; some for good and some for bad. The 1970s converted the intense changes of the 1960s into the norm, with great strides in science and technology along with the changing culture. America also faced some of the toughest political challenges to date, but those struggles strengthened America and made a lasting impact on the world. Throughout the 1970s, there were many advances in the fields of science and technology. “This movement, sometimes called ‘the New Right,’ pushed for a different kind of freedom. Instead of equality for blacks and women, they sought freedom for American businesses” (abhmuseum.org). As we moved into the 1970s there were less civil right fights for colored and women and more for the workplace and the LGBT community, “1979: The first Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights March on Washington draws more than 100,000 people on October 14” (civilrights.org). Wade. This case changed America forever and has ended millions of lives that should never have been stopped. It is speculated that this has hindered America from reaching its full potential. The case dealt with one Jane Roe, a girl who wished to have an abortion but laws permitted her from legally receiving one. This case made it all the way to the supreme court, and this is an excerpt from the case, “the State in promoting its interest in the potentiality of human life may, if it chooses, regulate, and even proscribe, abortion expect where it is necessary, in appropriate medical judgement, for the preservation of the life or health of the mother” (American Voices 360). This case decriminalized abortions and forever impacted America. Interestingly, Jane Roe is now a Christian who speaks out against abortion, she stated in her book Won by Love, “The proaborts loved Jane Roe and despised Norma McCorvey My Christian friends had learned to love a fallen person; my proabortion friends had despised the person and fallen in love with a myth – Jane Roe” (McCorvey 194).
