Who identifies as a Republican, a Democrat, or an independent? These are political parties that make up our political system that our founding fathers established. Over the years, in The Parties Versus the People by Edwards, mentions that “party” has become a synonym for rigid, narrow “faction.” People who are place in this category may be the President, a senator, a teacher, or a cashier because of their affiliation. A party affiliation in America involves major roles in our government, such as the electorate, people who serve on committees on local, state, and national levels, and parties in government in public officials and those who are elected. In The Rise of American Democracy, Sean Wilentz mentions that James Madison understood the process of how we select our leaders, how we deliberate, and how we decide is what affects our partisan in our politics. The problem is the party identification because it holds so much value and meaning as a voter. As a result, it affects an election’s outcome for public officials and committees. The political parties than have coalitions that represent these political groups and determines if you are a Republican or Democrat based on class, status, views and current social issues (Maisel 80). For example, in our current social issues, there are coalitions who try to prevent gun violence and enforce gun control then there may be an organization that would band this problem. As a result, one may identify as one party, but may identify as another because maybe one of the coalitions aligns more with their values.
