While it is apparent both positions may overlap in some respects, there are vast differences between the professions. Politicians, such as the United States 36th president, Lyndon B. Johnson, set out to defeat poverty and promote racial equality. Civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr, had a coinciding goal of promoting racial cohesion between whites and African Americans. Upon watching the 2014 film, Selma, it can be concluded Johnson’s and King’s road to success was paved differently. Due to their position of priority in government, activists have to work twice as hard compared to politicians to make an impact. Politicians have access to an abundance of resources because of their job and position. Undoubtedly, this makes it easier to accomplish their goal to campaign or spread their ideology. Politicians can use the fear of the other opposing side winning as a call to action to vote and support them. Politicians use their supporters to promote by encouraging them to use their voice on social media or public forums, selling t-shirts, bumper stickers, yard signs. Activists are often moved by human right, and since everyone is human, they take it personally. They have to make those who stand with them believe in it as much as they do. For example, an animal rights activist might need compelling pathos-driven arguments to convince cosmetic buyers to boycott certain beauty brands like L’Oréal and Revlon. Organizations like PETA, use infographics and videos to show the animals severely burned by chemicals and abnormal laboratory mice.
