Many people are not into politics, so they are unsure what the differences are between the Democrats and the Republicans. Both parties though, dominate America’s political landscape, but are exceedingly different from each other. Democrats are people who believe in the political or social equality of all people; Republicans are people who favor a republican form of government.
To start, most Democrats are highly liberal, or left-leaning, and are based on community and social responsibility. Then, there are the Republicans, who are conservative, or right-leaning, and based on the individual rights of people and justice. The Democratic Party was founded in 1792 by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other influential opponents of the Federalists; whereas the Republican Party was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists. Republicans favor a small government – both in terms of the number of people employed and the roles and responsibilities of government in society. Republicans have controlled the White House for 28 of the last 43 years since Richard Nixon became president. Some of the famous Democrat Presidents have been Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama. A few of the famous Republican Presidents include Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Richard Nixon. Republicans have more seats the Senate than the Democrats, having 54/100, whereas the Democrats have 44/100. Republicans also have more seats in the House of Representatives, with 245/435, and the Democrats having 188/435. Governorships, Republicans have 31/50, and the Democrats have the remaining 18/50.
