Amir and Hassan: The Sultans of Kabul. This inscription is located on a pomegranate tree, near the entrance of an old cemetery in Kabul. The Amir and Hassan of this inscription were friends since their childhoods, and this phrase is a product of their relationship. This pomegranate tree is not only a tree, but a representation of the relationship between Amir and Hassan. It shows the love and dedication of Hassan to Amir, through the tree and it’s fruits.
The fruits of the pomegranate tree become a showing of Hassan’s faithfulness and devotion to Amir in page 92 and 93 of the book, when Hassan, after being bombarded by pomegranates from Amir, smashes a pomegranate on his head, asking Amir, “Are you satisfied? If you know anything about trees, you’ll know that engravings and scars in tree bark do not heal. Such was the case for the phrase, “Amir and Hassan: Sultans of Kabul.” We know this is the case when Amir returns to Kabul to retrieve Sohrab. He stops at his old house, and returns to the pomegranate tree. The inscription is still there, but the tree is dead, much like the relationship between Hassan and Amir. Though it is no longer alive, the inscriptions, the memories made still remain. They remain in Amir’s mind, and they remain in that tree’s bark. The tree never left, but the surroundings and environment did. Kabul changed from a thriving community, to a war-torn, communist invaded state, and then to a still war-torn state run by the Taliban, but that tree stayed there. The same thing is with Amir and Hassan. Amir moved away to America, and went from Kabul, to life in America focusing on Baba, to living with a Wife and in-law family, but those memories of Hassan and the time they spent together never leave.
