Museum visit: The Pont des Arts, Paris. Pierr-Auguste Renoir’s The Pont des Arts, Paris is currently in the Norton Simon museum. The dimensions of the painting are 24 x 39-1/2 inches, painted on canvas with oil paints. It is considered impressionism art work made in the 19th century in Western Europe; its plein-air style painting was created in the center of Paris. This painting was made between the years of 1867-1868. This work demonstrates the talent of Renoir’s work and show’s how he was able to capture the scene of every-day life of people in different socioeconomic classes within one scene. Use of vanishing point is seen with the use of the buildings within the city starting with the theaters on the left and the French academy on the right. The horizon line is easily visible where the bright blue sky meets the top of the trees and buildings. The first thing that catches one eye is the vivid bright blue sky, and the contrast of the dark shadows of people, which are casted upon the neutral color scheme of the bank within the foreground. In the center of the mid-ground appears a crowd of rich upper class folks waiting for their turn to ride the ferry. To the left of the mid-ground is a crowed group of people on the dock, shuffling to get their way on or off the ferry. To the right of the painting is a ramp that leads those coming off the ferry, into the center of Paris or to the Pont des Art Bridge. At the start of the ramp there appears a poor woman with her children. Towards the back of the mid-ground are the buildings within the center of Paris; to the right is shiny domed building which is the institute of French fine art, and to the left is are the new theaters of the Place du Châtelet. In the background is this huge clear bright sky that take up half the picture plan and is layered with heavy coats of blue’s and thick white rough textured clouds that are layered throughout the sky.
