The Role of Pontius Pilate in the Crucifixion Pontius Pilate was a man who held many roles and responsibilities. Pontius Pilate was a Roman governor of Judea in the thirties of the first century A.D (Schiavone)., he collected taxes, and he also had certain judicial responsibilities , but probably the most famous role he is known for today was being a key figure in the Crucifixion of Jesus. We find the role of Pontius Pilate in the crucifixion in John 18 and throughout John 19. Even though many people have considered Pontius Pilate’s role to be cowardice seeing as how he did not take action when he saw no fault in Jesus or they have regarded his role as someone who was just doing his job. We must consider three questions in order to properly understand Pontius Pilate’s role: Should Pontius Pilate have sentenced Jesus to be crucified? All four Gospel accounts, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, actually record this important event. It’s not a trauma that interrupts the path, but an event that completes and perfects it, and projects it toward the eternal (Schiavone). We must understand before we go any further that the Crucifixion of Jesus had to happen in order for God’s will to be done. God’s will was to send His Only Son to die for the world’s sins. We see this truth in Acts 2:23 “ Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:.” and in Matthew 26:42 “Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” We see that the crucifixion was God’s deliberate plan. Jesus knew this, and He prayed to the Father asking Him for His will to be done. God knew what was going to happen and we must trust that his plan is always
