In self defense and trying to stop the Socs from drowning Ponyboy, Johnny pulled out his switchblade and killed Bob. The boys quickly decided to get out of town in an effort to avoid the “fuzz.” The boys say they hid away in the abandoned church for about five days when their friend and member of their gang, Dally Winston, came to help them. As they decided to turn themselves in, and walked past the church which had been their hiding place, they saw it was set afire. Johnny, acting quickly, ran into the church with Ponyboy following.
They decided that they would walk to Two-Bit’s house and drive them home in his car. While they were walking, Cherry and Marcia 's boyfriends drove up to them and they left. Pony and Johnny were on their way home but they decided to stop at the lot and look at the stars for a while. Eventually, they both fell asleep and by the time Ponyboy got home, it was 2 am.
Darry, Soda, and Pony are all waiting in the hospital to hear news of Dally and Johnny. They are bombarded with reporters, and Darry finally gets them to be left alone because Pony wasn 't’ feeling well. Pony takes a nap on Darry’s lap, and then the doctor finally came with news of Johnny and Dally. Dally would be good to go in a few days after his burns are taken care of, meanwhile Johnny is in critical condition, with not a great chance of making it out of there. On the way home, Pony falls asleep in the car and end up sleeping until the morning when Two-bit and Steve came over.
They then introduced themselves and said that their names were Cherry Valance and Marcia. After that had happened Two-Bit decided to scare Pony and Johnny so after that they had all agreed that the Johnny Pony and Two-Bit were going to walk Cherry and Marcia to their houses they then are stopped by their boyfriends and so then they go with them and the Socs leave. Two-Bit had then said good-bye and Johnny and Pony went to Johnny’s house and heard their parents fighting so they then run off to the lot and fall asleep It is now two in the morning and Darry was furious and so they got in a fight and then Darry hits Pony and then after that Johnny and Pony run away then get jumped by the gang of Socs and all of the sudden Johnny kills one of them and they run to Dally and Dally tells them to go to the abandoned church until the cops stop searching. After that Dally visits them and takes them to DQ and when they get back there is a fire at the church and there were kids in their so Johnny and Pony decide to go in to save them and Johnny sudden gets hit by a piece of flaming wood and he ends up in the hospital and then it starts a rumble with the Socs and Greasers and then moments later Johnny is dead and Dally couldn’t take it
This didn't make sense to Ponyboy yet. After running from the police when johnny stabbed Bob a soc they find themselves in an abandoned church. When Ponyboy returns to society after being in the hospital. He finds himself meeting with Randy, Bob's best friend. Pony is suppried when Randy tells him that he's sorry for Pony and how Bob's parents never gave him limits.
Darry questions ”Are you alright Ponyboy” because he cares so much about him. Darry does not want his loved ones to get hurt or get into any trouble with the police. Thats why he gives up his time to work and be the grown-up of the family. ” Nobody in my family had ever hit me. Darry screamed, Pony, I didn’t mean to! ”
Ponyboy has been gone from Darry, his older brother for about 6 days because they were hiding from the police after Johnny murdered a Soc. They ended up running into a burning church to save children from burning to death and after that they ended up in the hospital from their injuries. Ponyboy thinks that Darry doesn't like him and just wants him to be gone. When Darry sees ponyboy in the hospital, he starts to cry. Ponyboy has never seen Darry cry, not even at his parent’s funeral.
They run away to an abandoned church which burns down and Johnny is hurt when saving the kids inside. When Johnny is taken to the hospital, Pony reunites with his brothers, the greasers and the Socs have a huge rumble, he gets to know Randy, and Johnny and Dally die. Ponyboy becomes less afraid of Darry when he realizes that Darry actually does love him. After Ponyboy gets to see Darry when he is taken to the hospital because of the church fire, Darry is standing outside waiting for him. On page 96 Ponyboy writes, Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying... Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda. Ponyboy also becomes less afraid of Darry when he starts fighting back when Darry yells at him.
Instead of the Socs hurting them, Johnny does by actually kills one of the Socs, making the Socs run away and Johnny and Pony to run away to an abandoned church because of their actions. Eventually, they go out to get lunch with their other Greaser friend who planned their run away, Dally, but the church they were just in is burning now with kids in the church. They save the children and are celebrated as heroes but Johnny dies from saving the kids and unfortunately, Dally suicides because of Johnny’s death.
No longer then a few minutes later Ponyboy went running to Jonny and telling him that they were running away. After Jonny finally calmed Ponyboy down, he got it out of him that Darry had hit him. Ponyboy told Jonny that he could go home after he cooled down. As they were walking to the park nearby, they noticed the same car they had seen previously that night when they got caught by a couple of Soc's trying to walk their girls home after they had ditched their boyfriends after they were drinking. As the guys pulled up and got out of their car, Ponyboy noticed that they were drunk.
With Ponyboy and Johnny being the nice kids they are the tell Dallas to leave them along making get upset and leaving. After that the girls hang around with them for awhile until their boyfriends show up drunk and angry that two other guys are talking to their girls. The girls go home with them and Ponyboy and Johnny leave. Later that night they run into them again and they remember them starting a fight. Bob one of the Socs gets killed in the fight by Johnny in fear that he was going to kill Ponyboy.
All of Pony’s greaser gang rescues him and chases the Socs away. Pony is okay, but shaken up. Later in the novel, Pony, Johnny, and Dally go to the Nightly double and meet Cherry Valance and Marcia. It, for the most part, goes well.
