After Johnny’s death and Dally departure, Ponyboy wanders through the halls of the hospital, denying the fact that Johnny passed on. He continuously tells himself that he isn’t dead. He leaves the hospital and strolls on the streets, until a man picks him up in his car, and drives Ponyboy home. Upon reaching his house, Ponyboy is left to tell the rest of the gang about Johnny’s death. And to add on to the stress, they get a call from Dally about how he had just robbed a grocery store and was making a run for it. After hearing this, the entire gang rushes to the lot and find sirens, Dally and the cops. They see Dally aim a unloaded gun at the cop, but the cop thought it was loaded, so he fired at Dally instead and killed him. He asked many questions because he had just awoken from a concussion and was still a bit clueless and wonky. He doesn’t remember much other than Dally and Johnny dying. He then sees the book” Gone with the Wind”, and Darry tells him that Johnny had asked one of the nurses to pass it to him to read.
