How can someone be willingly to believe a prophecy involving killing their child? A prophet tells the parents of Oedipus that he will grow up to marry his own mother and kill his own father. With that in mind, his parents decided to take the prophecy onto their own hands. They gave the newborn baby to someone to leave it on a mountain, so that the baby can be left alone to die. All of these events unfold in the play Oedipus written by Sophocles starring the main character, Oedipus. Oedipus had survived being left alone on the mountain by the Shepherd, and lived in Corinth with the king and queen, who brought him in to live with them. During the investigation of the murder of King Laius, Oedipus explains to Jocasta what’s happening and starts questioning his parents to her, “I knew there was talk; I could not rest… I went to the shrine at Delphi” (Sophocles 231). Oedipus made the poor decision to question his parents’ relationship with him, instead of listening to his parents telling him they are his parents he chose to listen to a random stranger. Going to Delphi, the gods gave Oedipus an unclear statement of who his parents are. However, they also reveal a horrifying fate that he will have to encounter. Oedipus later reveals to Jocasta, “I heard all of this, and fled” (Sophocles 232). His fate reveals that he will sleep with his mother and kill his own father, so he made the poor decision to flee Corinth thinking he will sleep with his mother in Corinth. Visiting Delphi made Oedipus paranoid, leaving home after finding the truth led him to actually sleep with his mother and killed his own father. To sum it all up, Oedipus had made poor decisions after visiting Delphi, affecting his entire life and coming closer to his unfortunate
