Summary Response Paper #1 In “Poor Shaming-But This Time in the School Cafeteria”, author Shayna Cook introduces the idea of inequality in the lunchroom. The term Lunch Shaming is defined as “...a general term referring to when a student is singled out and embarrassed or ashamed due to them or their parents not being able to pay for school lunches, or if they have any unpaid lunch debt.” This idea is becoming very familiar to students in New Mexico schools, although it is not limited to just them. The article can show the raw realities of what everyday children are facing trying to obtain a school lunch and the movement to fix it. One such issue is school districts experiencing budget shortfalls due to some parents who simply cannot pay. Even though there are free and reduced meals available there are still some families that will fall between the cracks, not qualifying for this service but simply not having the extra money available or budgeted for their child’s meals.
In the article professional Rogi Banks speaks on the topic of lunch shaming. Banks states “School psychologists spend a lot of time working with teachers and administrators to minimize the prevalence of bullying among students... adults may also need support and understanding the role they play in this phenomenon.” To go into further detail of this quote, lunch shaming is considered and categorized as bullying and it not only includes student to student interaction but also adult to student. Since it is a form of bullying it can have similar effects to bullying such as mental and physical health struggles.
Students are facing their own equivalencies to adult debt punishments when it comes to school lunches. While adults would face things like going to jail or receiving tickets or even community service to “repay” their debts, school aged children are being forced into janitorial roles to pay for their lunch
