In 2018, we listen to artist like Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, we watch shows like 13 Reasons Why, Riverdale, and The Vampire Diaries. When we have free time, we use our phones to go on Snapchat Instagram or Youtube to watch people like Logan Paul, Liza Koshy, or Jake Paul. Also when teens hang out with friends, they enjoy going out to eat, shopping, or playing Fortnight. However kids and teens in the 50’s didn’t have IPhones, Xbox, artist or TV shows like we had. Instead the kids would go outside and enjoy playing with their dolls and toy cars, hanging out at their local diner, and going to drive ins. In the 50’s the most popular music genre was R&B and Rock ‘n’ Roll. However even though many people loved to listen to this music it caused more problems than necessary. “Some people believed that the popularization of R&B and Rock ‘n’ Roll put a huge gap between the Americans and African American and made the Civil Rights worse than it should have been” (Pearson, “Music Played in the 1950's Popular Music From the 50s.” The People History, ). The 50’s was filled with many genres of music like Rock ‘n’ Roll, Country, Pop, and R&B. The Rock ‘n’ Roll industry was taken over by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis,Little Richard, and Chubby Checker. The Pop industry was taken over by Nat Cole,Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Teresa Brewer, and Rosemary Clooney. Johnny Cash, Gene Autry,Hank Williams and Patsy Cline ruled the country music. The Yankees dominated the decade with all home runs they hit, the Cleveland Browns dominated with all the touchdowns they got, and Rocky Marciano and Floyd Patterson were the boxing superstars. College football was more popular than pro football and Baseball and Basketball were the topics of everyday conversation( Pearson“1950s Important News and Events, Key Technology Fashion and Popular Culture” ). Thanks to players like Mickey Mantle,Hank Aaron, and Jim Brown the sports industry has grown much more since then and will continue to grow. Being a kid in the 50s when there was no iPhones, tablets,or xbox sounds crazy well most boys and girls would go and play with their toys. Boys would go and play with their cars and the girls would play with their barbies. However teens for entertainment would go to school dances called “Sock Hops” and dance the night away(“ Popular Culture and Mass Media in the 1950s”). Sometimes they would go and hang out with their friends at their local diners, ice cream parlors, or pizza parlors. If you think about it the 50’s were not any different than now we still go to movies with our friends, talk about sports on a daily, watch tv shows and listen to popular music.
