When the names “Pope Francis” and “Macklemore” are placed side by side, it’s a wonder as to why the two would be mentioned together in the first place. Believe it or not, the, still fairly new, leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Saint Francis, and the maverick rapper, Macklemore, have more in common than previously thought; each being cultural icons preaching the similar messages of love, respect, and otherwise words amongst adoring masses, relinquishing stereotypes and seeking change in each one’s respected field.
Being cultural icons, Macklemore and Pope Francis have the attention of millions, even billions of people. Pope Francis began his leadership over the Catholic Church March 13, 2013. Since the construction of the Catholic Church and the first pope, Saint Peter, the Catholic denomination has gained many followers and remained a prominent influence on world power. Today almost 2.2 billion people are estimated to be Catholic on a global scale and each one looks to the Pope to interpret the teachings of the church. …show more content…

Pope Francis began his reign over the Catholic Church in a weird way, attracting media and press reporters like a moth to a flame. The new pope seemed to want to travel in a more humble, modest direction, cutting unnecessary spending and giving up the extravagant for the ordinary, unlike John Paul and Pope Benedict. Walls continued to fall as Pope Francis announced, “Who am I to judge a gay person of good will who seeks the Lord?” emphasizing the Catholic teachings of acceptance and repentance better than many predecessors. Just as Pope Francis, Macklemore addresses the topic of homosexuality in his music, particularly the song “, Same Love,” which became a sensation globally and an anthem for the gay community.
