1.) The moral issue the article is written about is abortion and the church granting forgiveness for getting one. Abortion is always a controversial topic and in particular the church’s views towards it and if it is okay, or not. Now, Pope Francis has given Roman Catholic priests and not only bishops the opportunity to offer absolution for the “sin of abortion”. This will occur for one year, starting December, the church’s holy year of mercy. Francis states he has “met so many who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision” (Goodstein 2015). First, although the Pope gave permission to the priests to grant an absolution, the Vatican officials declare the Pope and the church’s opposition towards abortion is not changing. This shows the church will still not accept the idea of abortion however, just like any other sin they can grant absolution only after one has repented. In addition, Candia R. Moss, a professor of New Testament at University of Notre Dame, also believes the Pope’s choice does not mean change. Instead, it will make women who felt judged and hated by the church to feel they are welcomed back. As a result, he would say the act of performing an abortion is immoral. This is due to his theory on how humans’ actions should be done in a way that everyone else would repeat it. Kant’s deontology means doing what is right and in society this would not be considered not right for a lot of people. For the Pope’s decision, Kant would acknowledge this is morally good because it is in the churches and priests power and duty to grant absolutions for sins. The priests will not gain anything for themselves, but for the women who will feel forgiven and better about who they are. Furthermore, Kant’s resolution to the Pope would relate to his theory on how people should never be treated be treated in regard to their dignity, or working class, but only as means. Certainly, the priests granting absolution is a great example of this aspect in action.
