The Columbian Exchange occurred when Columbus arrived in the new world and disease, culture, crops, and animals were traded. This swap caused the great biological exchange. When the Spanish and later English came over to the new world along with crops and animals they also brought disease. Europeans, living among many diseases, had built immunity to the ailment, but since the natives had never been exposed to the illnesses they had no immunity and the disease quickly spread. The Europeans, unintentionally, started an epidemic that would spread throughout the Americas and single handedly kill millions of Natives.
The Colombian Exchange had a negative effect on history because of diseases, slavery, and many people died. The Colombian Exchange was the spread of non-native plants, animals, and diseases from Europe to the Americas back and forth. The British settlement encouraged people to go over to the new colonies and discover new lands, which are the Africa, Asia, and some of the Western Hemisphere. But what they didn’t know was that they have adapted to different diseases and new diseases could kill many people. According to D’Souza from “The Crimes of Christopher Columbus” he states that, “From the Indians the Europeans contracted syphilis.
The Columbian Exchange between the new world and the old world significantly change people’s lives. After 1492, Europeans brought in horses to America which changes the nomadic Native American groups’ living from riding on buffalos to horses. This interchange also change the diet of the rest of the world with foods such as corns (maize), potatoes which are major diet for European nowadays. Besides all the animals from old world to the new world, Spanish also brought in the diseases that Native Americans were not immune of, such as smallpox which led to a large amount of Native Americans’ deaths.
The Exchange also brought new diseases to both hemispheres, though the effects were greatest in the Americas. Smallpox from the Old World wiped out millions of the Native American population to mere fractions of their original
The Columbian Exchange The Columbian Exchange had a negative effect on the world due to these reasons. Slavery, land taken from the native americans by europeans by force and diseases that wiped a major amount of native americans. The Columbian Exchange was the widespread transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations, technology, and ideas .Three groups were affected by this the most ,Africa,Europe,Native americans between the 15th and 16th century Slavery killed more than 4.5 million people and affected way more. Slaves were in harsh conditions when coming to america.
The Columbian exchange had both positive and negative effects. The Columbian exchange was all about the exchange of plants, population, ideas, domestic animals, weeds and etc. The Columbian exchange describes both the new world and the old world, the Christopher Columbus discovery of the new world. The Columbian exchange had huge impact of American history.
Positive effects of the Columbian Exchange was that it gave Europe and America new resources which in turn expanded their knowledge. The got new foods, animals, and materials they wouldn't otherwise have. The bad thing about the Columbian Exchange was that it spread disease between Europe and
The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of goods animals and plants from one country to another. The Columbian Exchange had many impacts. Some of them can still be seen today. One example is introduction of new species. Another is the slave trade that happened.
However, trade and commerce had a negative effect on both sides as well, namely disease. Disease killed a lot of Native Americans as well as gave syphilis to the Old World. The Old World exchanged a vast amount of diseases, for example, smallpox, measles, malaria, yellow fever, influenza, and chick pox. In the New World, the diseases that were exchanged with the Old World were syphilis, polio, hepatitis, and encephalitis (“The Columbian Exchange Introduction”). Due to the fact that both Old and New Worlds had all those illnesses that were crossing the ocean, the Native American population was diminished.
The Columbian Exchange was a momentous change to the entire world. One of the greatest blunders in the history turned into one of the most radical transformation of a cultural atmosphere. The collision of two completely different world created a large infusion of cultures through the exploitation of goods and values from the “New World” to the “Old World”. During this time, the Europeans tasted, in a literal sense, what the “New World” had to offer and were exalted by the abundance of highly sought products all within their grasp. Items ,such as sugar, became one of the first reason for the exploitation of the Americas, as Europeans, astonished by the exotic plants and futility of the “New World” land began to make their first moves.
With the arrival of the Western World to the Americas there were both positive and negative outcomes. These two cultures collided together in a way rarely seen in history. This became known as the Columbian Exchange. Looking at the big picture the overwhelming negative was the violence the Native Americans withstood from the Western World. Whereas two positives are the mass globalization of crops and the globalization of animals.
The benefits did outweigh the consequences. To start off, I have three topics to support/back up my conclusion that the benefits did outweigh the consequences. Next, the Columbian Exchange. The Native Americans gave the Europeans gold and silver. They also gave them corn, potatoes, beans, vanilla, chocolate, tobacco, and cotton.
In terms of benefits the Columbian Exchange only positively affected the lives of the Europeans. They gained many things such as, crops, like maize and potatoes, land in the Americas, and slaves from Africa. On the other hand the negative impacts of the Columbian Exchange are the spread of disease, death, and slavery. In document 3b it states, “... an epidemic broke out, a sickness of pustules… very many people died of them, and many just starved to death; starvation reigned and no one took care of each other.”
Furthermore, trade introduced new diseases to new parts of the world causing millions of deaths. Although, these diseases such as polio killed millions in the old world. Trade from old to new world brought about the Columbian Exchange. The Columbian Exchange was
However, the Columbian exchange didn’t always benefit both the Native Americans and the Europeans. Diseases were also exchanged, specifically to the Native Americans. Whether the exchanges were positive or negative, the Columbian exchange had a huge global effect, both immediately after the exchange and long-term. The Columbian exchange caused inflation in Europe, change in hunting habits of Native Americans, change in farming habits within Europe, and a large decrease of Native American populations.
