Positive Deconstruction The writer, Jesse Spero, uses this article to portray Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon as a loving interracial couple. Spero makes this a point by using numerous quotes from Carey and Cannon where they both use words to describe how together they are as a couple (Spero, 2010). Similar to how Native American men are seen with white women, Cannon himself has said that Carey has made him a better man (Jacobs, 2002, pg. 34). Many of the quotes in the articles serves to highlight Cannon’s values. Cannon is not the stereotypical black man people are used to seeing in the news media. Cannon is not abusive to his spouse nor is he overly dominate towards her (Dines, 1998, pg. 456). Cannon’s supportive and loving nature is shown in the article by how he praises Carey’s strength and resolve during a critical event in their marriage. This gives readers the impression that Cannon is genuinely in support of his spouse. The quotes taken of Cannon in the article also indicate that he does not have any other agendas other than to report his good news to the world. Unlike the colonial stereotypes of the black man, Cannon is not using this story to feed his ego (Fanon, 1986, pg. 51). Cannon is not using Carey’s situation get media time to endorse a movie nor is he trying to get attention for anything in particular.
