During the 1700’s technology began that would change how people would work. Instead of using human and animals as energy sources, they began to develop water and steam power to operate machines. This era was called the Industrial Revolution. With machines doing the work that used to be done by people, it made getting the work done much easier. The Industrial Revolution also brought about changes in transportation. Before the Industrial Revolution, boats on canals and rivers was the best for long distance travel. The Industrial Revolution brought about cars and airplanes. The Industrial Revolution also resulted in a higher standard of living. In the early 1800’s, taking a boat on a canal or river was the best way to travel any distance. With the invention of the steam engine, trains would replace boats. William Kelly developed a new process in the late 1850’s called the Bessemer Process. This allowed factories to increase their production of locomotives and railroad tracks. The train was a quicker way to travel which resulted in increased travel and trade. Internal combustion engines led to the invention of airplanes and automobiles. In 1908 Henry Ford wanted to build a car that people could afford. Ford did that by building a line of affordable cars called the Model T. On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright flew powered airplane in sustained flight. They then attached a version of the internal combustion engine to their plane. This helped developed the use of airplanes for travel, and to transport goods. With quicker travel time, it gave people more free time.
