Soja University of New England SSW 503 Research 1 For Professor Kerry Dunn 18 November 19, 2014 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Introduction According to the CMAJ (2010), a large proportion of the American aged population is at risk of contracting PTSD. This is a condition in which individuals who have been exposed to traumatic situations often tend to have emotional and mental problems associate with the kind of trauma that they were exposed to. Beevers (2011) further indicates that amongst the populations at risk, veterans are the ones who most at risk, a belief that is further perpetuated by Galor (2012). First of all, it is evident that individuals suffering from the condition are getting more aware of their plight and are, therefore, reaching out for help. This is as indicated by CMAJ (2010) which identified that veterans suffering from PTSD are reaching out for help. This can be associated with the work championed by the social workers calling out for the rights of the veterans and asking them to come out for help. Further, the social workers have seen to it that stigmatization of the individuals is avoided. As a result, more veterans are coming out for help. It would, therefore, be quiet unfortunate if the individuals reached out for help yet did not get any. This would revert the situation back to where they just sit back without seeking any help, which is quite a …show more content…

Tuerk et al (2009) assert that there are PTSD-related compulsive behaviors amongst the veterans. More often than not, the individuals cannot function well socially. They have lost touch with their families and they have no idea on how to establish the bond again. In some instances, the veterans become so harsh to their spouses or too hard in disciplining their children. This leads to a kind of fear and the family tends to set apart the individuals. They cannot effectively participate in family issues. As a result of going through the social draught, most of the veterans often resort to alcohol in an attempt to drown the memories of war and finding peace within. Rather than delivering the expected results, such habits often make the situation worse. It is no surprise, therefore, that it has led to breaking up of families. This implies that the issue is a social concern that has to be addressed
