Posttraumatic Stress Syndrome Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is defined as; A condition of persistent mental and emotional Stress occurring as a result of Sever Injury or Severe Psychological Shock, typically involving disturbance of sleep and constant recall of the experience, with dulled responses to others and to the outside world. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition caused by a life altering event that an individual experienced or witnessed for example: *Combat/War *Natural Disaster *Car Accident/Medical Emergency *Sexual Assault The affected individual symptoms may vary. Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder can be traced all the way back to at least Ancient Greece. During World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War it was labeled as “Shell Shock” or “Combat Fatigue”. It wasn’t until the 1970’s the term “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder” was used. Studies were conducted for soldiers returning from Vietnam. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder was officially recognized as a mental health condition by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1980 in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III). Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is more common in women than men. It is estimated that an average of 3.5% of the adult population in the U.S.A. is affected by Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in any given year and 9% of people will develop it at some point in life.
