Poverty is a theme that is predominant throughout Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck as well as in society as noted in the infographic, The Psychology of Poverty. The book is set during the Great Depression of the early 1930s, when the country was in a time of economic crisis as millions of jobs were lost, leaving people homeless and poor which categorized them as living in poverty. The two main characters, George and Lennie, are migrant farm workers, who have lived from one farming job to the next in the state of California.
