Poverty is Sexist
When people think of poverty and the malnutrition it instills, one often considers an individual’s lack of resources due to the extremely unequal income distribution within our world. Although this most certainly proves true, many neglect to examine the inequality present within the issue of poverty itself. With their low social status, lack of proper of education, and limited resources to improve food security, women represent 70% of the 1.3 billion people facing impoverishment worldwide. It is because of this statistic that four-time enemy nominee, Connie Britton, proudly sported a sweater to the 2018 Golden Globe awards reading “Poverty is Sexists”. In her article, Yes, poverty is sexist. Here’s why, Connie touches on the growing women’s rights movement adding “[that] at a time when we are acknowledging the destructive nature of sexism and systemic gender inequality in our culture, my hope is that this movement, this conversation will reach outward to all places where women’s voices are silenced so frequently, as well as beyond our borders to some of the poorest places in the world, where poverty is such a defining factor of women’s lives and subsequently of their communities and nations.” By directly affecting the prosperity of future generations, as well as comprising one-half of the potential human capital, empowering women in these developing countries will not just benefit their own wellbeing, but could aid in political, economic and environmental
