He did not want to be with his parents at all because it wasn’t safe. His father tried to cover up having a double life with his first wife. He went back and forth between houses; he had two different families. In the book, it says, “And then, once the time is right, with one abrupt, swift action I’m going to completely knock them out of my life. I’m going to divorce them as my parents once and for all and never speak to either of those idiots again as long as I live” (pg. 64).
This line shows his child mentality,
After telling his father, “Go on, go! I don’t want you to stay - I hate you and I hope you never come back!” he feels guilty but pushes the feeling away. When he finds out that his father may have died in a landslide in Bougainville, regret swallows him.
Papa was the one acting like a child, and Josef was the adult” (Gratz, pdf. 112). Papa was acting like a child scared to go to the dentist, so Josef did what he had to do to hopefully insure them a place in Cuba. This quote shows that Josef had grown up to help Papa and his family. Situations may cause this to happen which relates to my theme.

In the beginning of the story, he was an innocent kid without any worries or fears about his father or things that coming up. He tends to think positively about things around him. When the boy witnessed his father was about to beat his mother, he was scared, but then, he decided to stop his father from doing it. "The boy rose from his chair. ' No!'

(Line 3) Clearly, the boy is still youthful in this situation. He begins to beg his father to tell him a story. His father, saddened by lack of a story, struggles to figure out something to tell the boy. The man then notes his fear that if he fails to tell his son stories, he will leave his father.
In addition, he also speaks of the only thing his father had said to him that entire evening - stating that he asks if he’s “going home now,” again, possibly back to work. One can infer that his father likely encourages them to work their hardest, considering that being the only thing he had said to
The father doesn't help anyone to make sure that his son has enough food to eat to survive. He refuses to help the others and he doesn't need to share what he has with anyone. Because of that, his son will survive longer. When he meets a boy about his son's age, he can take the boy with them. But maybe he is afraid that if he does so, he will be distracted in protecting his son.
Throughout the novel the father's love for his son pushes him to protect him no matter the risks. For example in the novel many times the two would go to an abandoned house
The son undergoes moral development during this moment, and Wolff demonstrates this by using foils, symbolism, and by changing the connotation of the word snow. It is due to these literary devices that Wolff demonstrates the son’s moral development during a memorable moment. Throughout the novel it is apparent that the father and mother of the son are complete opposites.
The father was just simply trying to introduce his child to good music and give him a great opportunity. However this was not a good enough excuse for the child 's mother. She barely gives him another chance on Christmas eve to take his son out skiing. The son said,” He’d have to fight for the privilege of my company…” This quotes explains how close the father was to jeopardizing his chances of spending time with his son as it is.

The reader may also infer that the mother she may think the father is a bad influence on her son. I think this because of how different the father and son act. The father is a rule-breaker and does not plan ahead well while the son does not like to break rules and always plans ahead. Although not much information is told about the mother, you can predict that she would have been very angry if her son had been brought home any later than Christmas eve. You can predict this because when the father wasn’t allowed to drive through the snow he stated, “Your mother will never forgive me for this,” (Wolff 34).
