The film, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, has been categorized as an impactful movie and changed the way many individuals think about certain topics that still remain an issue within society. The way that it was most impactful was the way that it reflected and took an approach to power dynamics. The perspective of power dynamics throughout this film could be very similar to mental healthcare institutions or other institutions spread across the nation. The power dynamic is what defines this movie as a whole. The authority figure would be Nurse Ratched and the oppressed would be the patients that seek help for their mental illnesses.
And it truly shocks me that even in 2015 this is still very relevant in the work place no matter where a woman finds work. At the end of the day no matter how independent the woman may be, or how high of a role she may play in her job, she will still have to go through the chain of men who can easily decide the fate of her career. And in my opinion, this way society runs wont changed. We as women will constantly be taught that men are the superior. They are the main providers and they are who should be looked at as leaders to any kind of business attributes.
This is true because men use leadership and teamwork to take on dominant roles within the U.S. By "intellectual fad” Jenson refers to the way the population way of thinking has been shaped to think. The idea that men should be manly and in control has been drilled into everyones head but in the end its blamed on biology even though woman are equally capable. The input on “intellectual fad” gives Jenson credibility in his essay.
Overtime, these roles lead to the development of patriarchal society. According to Allan G. Johnson’s article on Patriarchy, “a society is patriarchal to the degree that is male-dominated, male-identified, and male-centered ” meaning that it was a system where men were in authority over women which could be considered as a variation within The Takers philosophical supremacy (153). The practice of patriarchy or male dominance benefitted men of all races and class, but in turn, placed women at a disadvantage. With patriarchy, the society became centered on men, which overshadowed women.
Are we, women, just a mere prop to strengthen men’s power and pride? Are women only existing in this world to serve and satisfy men? Back in the day when men are dominating the government and our society, women are just left in their houses. Society sees them as a puppet, a person who is only capable of doing household chores or even a mere baby maker. Freedom is non-existent to a woman’s life and they are treated like criminals who are sentenced to life imprisonment or like a bird whose wings are broken and trapped inside a cage.
They are meant to grow up and be the dominate person in the house, the provider, keeping a roof overhead and food on the table— provide it was prepared by a woman. We know that everyone is different, then why do we paint the young male gender with a big blue brush?
In order for one to be powerful, they must know the definition of power. Power is defined as, “a person that has a lot of control and influence over other people” (Merriam Webster Dictionary”. One might not truly understand the disadvantage that women have been given in life. Throughout history it is evident that women have always been a dishonor to society, and they have been treated as if they are inferior to men. What people fail to realize, is that women, are forceful, influential, intellectual human-beings.
Women are not encouraged to challenge the status quo of male authority because men do not believe that women should have power that amounts to more than, or equal to men. The largest problem here is that men do not see their beliefs as condescending or as oppressive because they just simply feel that it is their duty to protect and care for
Men have given the media this unrealistic image that women cannot fend for themselves, cannot do hard jobs, or cannot get as far in life as a man. Even in jobs, though a woman and a man may be in the same position, women “earn just 74 cents for every $1 a man earns” (CNNMoney). This is truly unfair, yet men today still say that women are “equal,” though it is obviously false. Women today, though they have more rights than in the 1800’s, are still not in the place we need to be in ranking with men. Women are still abused, sexually harassed and mistreated more than men because of their sex.
