Officially established in 1925, the Schutzstaffel, or SS, originally served to protect the Nazi party, but soon transformed into a prime example of Germany’s brutal militaristic force under Adolf Hitler. The SS, under Heinrich Himmler, grew quickly, illustrated in Yale Law School’s analysis of the Nuremberg Trial Proceedings, where the text reads, “In 1929… the SS consisted of 980 men who were regarded as especially trustworthy. In 1933, it was composed of 52,000 men drawn from all walks of life. The choir boys follow the commands of their leader and assist him in accomplishing his often violent goals. Page 135 of Lord of the Flies demonstrates this, “The drove of pigs started up; and at a range of only ten yards the wooden spears with fire-hardened points flew toward the chosen pig” (Golding 135). The choir boys hurling the spears, regardless of any sense of compassion for their chosen meal, demonstrates the lengths they go to in order to please and fulfill Jack’s orders. Regardless, the choir boys follow Jack’s orders in more ways than simply violence, as shown on page 20, where, after Jack commands the choir to stand still, the text reads, “Wearily obedient, the choir huddled into line and stood there swaying in the sun” (Golding 20). Plagued by the sweltering heat, the choir boys, despite the lack of proper authority or enforcement on the island, follow Jack’s orders to their detriment.
