Power of love in Maria Housden 's Hannah 's Gift changed my perception on family 's experiences with a child 's death. Having grown up in a family funeral home business, I always saw death as a positive aspect of life, but I also learned everyone takes death in a different way. The Housden 's family celebrates Hannah 's life on earth and learns from her experience motivates me to count my blessings and learn from life. Throughout the book I was very touched by Hannah 's brother, Will 's interactions and interpretations of his sister 's short life. Being an only child, I 've never truly understood sibling relationships but after this reading I have gotten one step closer. One example of her daily behavior was being very truthful with her care team right off the bat. Hannah told each of them what she did and did not like, and they all followed through, "From that day on, no more than three or four residents entered Hannah 's room at a time, and everyone who did introduced themselves to her using their real names" (Housden 28). She taught her family, care team, and church community the importance of being fearless in life because of how short life can be. Later in the book Maria touches lightly on her divorce from Claude and in the acknowledgments, and she thanks her second husband. Being stuck in a room, no opportunity to interact with your peers, and little time to play with anyone other than your family. Her mom noticed what she needed in order to keep developing properly, by letting her control little aspects of her day, it made the hospital seems less intimidating. As her mom says, "I saw it as a way to preserve some sense of Hannah 's dignity. So many things were literally being forced down her throat, she needed to have control over something" (Housden 95). Maria being a stay at home mother allowed care for Hannah as her focus, taking care of herself last. That selflessness is something only a mother 's love could consist of.
Throughout Hannah 's short life she taught her community the meaning of making the most out of life, as a response the community gave her love in return. Hannah learned and taught people to make the best out of situation as a three-year old in the hospital setting. Most importantly, she taught her parents the importance of family and love. Lastly, Hannah emphasized how short life can be, specifically in the eyes of her mother. The relationship between Hannah 's soul teachings and her community 's power of love resulted in a better-quality life for everyone
