Precious realizes how horrific her mother was to her development and that she wants nothing to do with her. Precious is taking control and responsibility for her own life here and uses her inner resources and strengths. Overall, in the context of adversity, Precious was resilient and became a survivor as she turned her traumatic events into an empowering narrative.
Personal Reflection
The movie Precious was a very powerful yet emotional movie to watch. I was shocked to see how resilient Precious was, despite having limited resources and such traumatic life events. I also really respected her vulnerability throughout her psychological journey. At first, she was not able to ask for help, and she kept her story a secret. Throughout her journey, she became vulnerable and transparent with her life. I grew up with a father who was very emotionally and verbally abusive, and have seen those events have a ripple effect in my life. I still believe some of the lies that I have been told from my childhood and it has affected my self-esteem greatly. Abuse does not discriminate against any socioeconomic class, gender, age, or ethnicity. There was such an emphasis on the importance of connection and relationships to Precious, which made me realize how important it will be for me to connect on multiple levels with my clients. The case worker and teacher were constantly looking out for the good of Precious. This reminds me that I need to have my client 's goals and interest in mind and not to have a personal agenda of my own.
