Preconceived College Before entering college, many students hold certain assumptions about “college life.” The majority of the time, the things people assume about college tend to be false or not what they were expecting. For many students, this could be a large let down, seeing as how they might have been expecting to constantly party. However, for some it could be a sigh of relief due to the pressure of trying to fit in might be overwhelming. Three main assumptions students have about attending college are having endless freedom, dorm life being better than living at home, and expecting to party every night. Students often assume that going to college automatically gives them perpetual freedom. Although going to college does allow for more freedom, the amount of freedom is not exactly as expected. At home, the student would not have to share a public restroom with at least twenty other people. Also, sharing a community bathroom puts the student at risk of contracting multiple different diseases. The students that have to share the bathrooms often have conflicting schedules, meaning that one student could go to shower, but not get a chance because they are all in use. This causes students to have to schedule and manage their time around the schedule of other students they share the bathroom with. At their own home, most people can escape to their own room to find peace and quiet to focus on doing homework. At college, they have to take into consideration that they are sharing a room with another person who could have friends over who are loud and inconsiderate.
