Give an example when you felt that someone was prejudiced against you. What do you think caused this attitude? Did this person display any discrimination behaviors and, if so, how?

Every time my family and I would take a trip to Hilo be were always sure to stop by our favorite Chinese restaurant. We admired the simple yet delicious dishes. It may not have been the fanciest of places but their food was nothing short of excellent. One day, we all got dressed up and headed to Hilo to attend a funeral service. Once the service had concluded, we drove straight to our favorite restaurant as usual. As soon as we entered the building, we noticed something different. We were not greeted with the usual warm welcome however we thought nothing of it and continued on our way. We then took notice to the decline in service. Work ethic is everything and has been instilled in me since I can remember. With that being said they do not have much, if any, regard for homeless people, especially those who are seeking money. They engraved in my mind the idea that if I give anything to a homeless individual it shall be food, and only food. If I give them money they’ll just go and acquire drugs or go to the nearest gas station and buy alcohol. And thus my prejudice against homeless people was born.

If I saw someone with a sign at a four-way stop, I would immediately roll my window up. If I passed a group of homeless people, I wouldn’t even acknowledge them. If I were asked for anything, I would pretend that I did not hear them. I have since learned that not all of them can be categorized as a homeless drunk. A few of them are actually active contributors in our community. Now, I am always sure to offer a smile to them because regardless of their current situation they are still a human being who deserves the same respect as any other
