Everyday Effects of Prejudice and Stereotypes When people look at America today, we see a country that is the most democratic country in the world. The Declaration of Independence states that “all men are created equal,” but we still see massive disparity in the outcomes for people of different ethnicities and genders. Stereotypes, even when not visible, can have a large effect on people’s lives. In 12 Angry Men, we see lots of prejudice against the defendant, since he is an Italian who lives in the slums. Although only one juror reveals his prejudices bluntly, it is obvious that these prejudices play a role in the juror’s opinion of the defendant. In 12 Angry Men, a significant amount or jurors were affected by their prejudices before the trial even took place and almost assumed that the defendant was guilty. Although people cannot always control their prejudices, they must learn to identify when their prejudices take place and stop their prejudices from influencing their decisions. In society, especially in the Western world, progressive beliefs are the norm but these beliefs don’t always manifest into real life. During the times of the Kitty Genovese murder in The Witness, the effects of racism were evident as there were racist housing policies and police brutality, which were obvious examples of society discriminating against minorities. This indirectly led to the murder of Kitty Genovese, as her killer, Winston Moseley, was forced to live in tough circumstances in New York and was forced to experience trauma when he was a child, as he was hit by a car and became unconscious when he was just young boy. This brain damage made him suffer from mental problems, which could have been the reason for his insanity and bloodthirst. In countries where it is normal, it continues to affect minorities and bring them down. Even in countries that are considered progressive, prejudice still continues to affect the lives of people through subtle prejudice as well as the psychological effects of prejudice on the people who experience it. Prejudice has created disparities in the incomes and standards of living for people of different genders, sexualities, and races but it is also important to remember that prejudice does not affect everything. But even with all of this knowledge we are still left with questions, like how can we know when prejudice is affecting our thought process and decisions? Do we not like the candidate subconsciously because she is a girl or because she is not a great candidate? And how can we stop subconscious prejudice from affecting our thought processes and
