The men who signed the Declaration of Independence risked their lives for independence. While the Declaration of Independence declared the colonist’s freedom from Great Britain, Patriots still had to win a war. They fought to make Great Britain accept the colonist's independence. With the help of the French, colonist won the war and on October 19, 1781, Great Britain surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia. At the End of the American Revolution, the British gave America back all the land previously claimed by Great Britain during the French and Indian War. On September 3, 1783, Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris. Great Britain finally recognized the United States of America as an independent nation and its own country. The delegates argued back and forth about slavery, Finally, they realized they could not solve the issue and still remain united. All language about slavery was taken out of the Declaration of Independence. The issue of slavery would not be settled in the country until the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865). The Declaration of Independence reminds us that is wrong to be prejudiced against people because of their color or faith, for all people. The Declaration contains the words “All men are equal.” But it does not mention women. In the 1700’s, the word men were often meant to include women. Over time, the values expressed in the Declaration were applied to women as well and also gained their rights to vote. The Declaration of Independence is probably the most famous of all American documents. It defines basic American rights and liberties and it inspires us to build a world in which everyone will enjoy the basic freedom. These include the well-known rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The Declaration also says that all people are equal and entitled to the same basic human rights and liberties. The ideas from the American revolution spread throughout the world. Other countries used it as inspiration when declaring their own independence. In 1790’s, French used the American Revolution as inspiration for their own revolution. One measure of the Declaration’s greatness is the fact that it continues to influence people throughout the States and the world, even today. Today Americans still celebrate this day and we consider this as the birthday of our country. The Declaration of Independence remains an important document.
