What I think Harper Lee creates Aunt Alexandra’s prejudice towards other social groups, and Maycomb’s prejudice towards African-Americans to illustrate the bias opinions of others, and the impact that they have on the town’s southern society throughout the 1930’s.
Harper Lee uses symbolism to explain the idea of prejudice in the novel. She does this by letting the reader know the people of Maycomb’s feeling towards Tom Robinson with out knowing the whole story. For example, in to kill a mockingbird Tom Robinson is put to death for a crime he did not commit. This can relate to when Atticus says, “shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit tem, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. This means that it was also a sin to kill a tom Robinson.
To Kill a Mockingbird: In To Kill a Mockingbird there are plenty of lessons that you learn reading the book. The one I am going to talk to about is always being nice by seeing things from other’s point of view. There is a quote from the book “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. This quote is saying be nice to everyone, because you don’t know what they’re going through. The quote was from Atticus.
Hatred has always been around in history, including from all of our literature that we’ve read this semester, and what we’ve learned. Some, more than others. And some still to this day. In our Holocaust unit, there has been many, many examples of hatred, but I’ll talk about the hatred from Defiance.
To start, within the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, there is the idea that prejudice will always exist in society. Within the book, Maycomb, at several different points within the story, demonstrates their intense hatred against the colored population within the town itself. One key point with this idea is within chapter 26, where Scout’s teacher, Miss Gates, revealed how human’s always ostracized their kind because of a variable external trait that they held through the example of Hitler. In To Kill a Mockingbird prejudice in Maycomb is terrible. There are two major people in To Kill A Mockingbird that are prejudged severely. Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are the two main people who are prejudged. There is also one other man who prejudged, Atticus Finch. All three of these men are mockingbirds.
Have you ever thought of what courage means? Well, courage means the strength in the face of pain and relief. Courage takes place in this book because of all the circumstances and characters during the novel. Physical courage is shown in this book, when Atticus was standing in the middle of the street, facing a rabid dog armed with a shotgun. This is an impressive action to the children, so now Atticus has to show different types of courage to show that he is strong.
There is a disease that can change the way you behave and can spread from any person to you. This disease is racism. The novel To Kill A Mockingbird shows how racism is like a disease spreading and infecting people, changing how they behave and act, but just like a disease is curable. Using information and evidence from the novel I will show you how the novel does this. The disease is described below.
Social prejudice is shown throughout Harper Lee’s award winning book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee powerfully analyses the theme social prejudice, and its effect on people. Such as how the Social prejudice is discrimination based on your status in society. An example of social prejudice would be the Radley family, which consists of Boo Radley, Nathan Radley and Arthur Radley. As they haven’t been out of their house in years people are lead to believe the rumours.
Cultural norms are what make and shape a society. They are the guidelines, and or patterns, that are to be followed, in order to be considered a normal, typical, everyday citizen. As such, it does not matter if the norms are right or wrong. As long as the citizen is still a part of their society, right and wrong does not matter, as far as they are concerned. In the case of To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the cultural norm, of Maycomb County, embraces the wrong, in the form of extreme prejudice behavior.
How did prejudice happen in this world that God made? Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. In this world, there are a lot of prejudice. Prejudice doesn´t happen suddenly but it happens from a root. Everything happens from a root and that causes to be or do something.
Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced” (Lee 329). While this may seem like a useful life lesson, Scout realizes the clear hypocrisy in her lesson. Like every other citizen of Maycomb, she is prejudiced against black people. Even though she is teaching her students that prejudice and persecution is wrong, she is participating in those very activities at home. She heard her third grade teacher after Tom Robinson’s trial, she thought “it’s time somebody taught ‘em a lesson, they were gettin’ way above themselves, an’ the next thing they think they can do is marry us” (Lee 331).
Prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird Prejudice in the 1950s was a problem and it still is in 2017. When it comes to the topic of prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee conveys it is important that before judging someone, get to know them better. One example of prejudice Harper Lee uses in To Kill a Mockingbird is Tom Robinson. In the small town of Maycomb almost everyone assumes Tom is guilty of raping Mayella Ewell even though there is no evidence or reasoning.
Children go to school to gain knowledge, but life can give children the most important education. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem, and Scout are two growing children navigating life in the 1930’s in racist Alabama. They see racism throughout their town and have to navigate how they want to live their lives or follow their town. In their own school, they see racist people, and they often question what they hear, see, and learn.
