Medications are essential for some people and, in most cases, are what keep them alive. Without these drugs, something as simple as a cold could kill somebody - and it has when individuals don’t take the medications that will help them get better. Over the last couple of decades, prescription medication has increased on average by 20%, and in some instances its more. The U.S. government needs to impose market regulations on pharmaceutical companies regarding the price of lifesaving medications/drugs. The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has done very little over the years to stop the price hikes of pharmaceutical products. Most FDA officials will say it is not their department that handles this situation but they do have some some programs to help lower the prices for consumers. Virginia lawmakers are taking aim at the silent and hidden scam driving up prescription drug prices. It’s called a ‘copay clawback’. “The bill before you is a pro-consumer, pro-transparency bill that will help patients and our brick and mortar pharmacists back in our districts,” says Delegate Todd Pillion from Virginia’s 4th District. Pillion has introduced legislation to close a drug price loophole. This bill would essentially give pharmacists the opportunity to freely tell patients about the cheapest way to pay for their prescriptions. Ideally, it would put money back in the pockets of patients who are struggling to find a way to pay for these drugs.
