America’s problems from 1976 to 1980 forced Americans and their politicians to confront, as President Carter put it in his 1979 Malaise Speech, a “crisis in morale.” According to the documentary, American hope had been tarnished in Vietnam, trust had been lost following the Watergate Scandal and the 1973 oil embargo had gashed the economy.
