The President of the United States is the face of the government and the figure people turn to most to voice their concerns. The president doesn't do it all alone though. It's impossible to manage a country by yourself. For that reason, the president appoints a collection of people to lead the various departments. Do you know them all?
There are five roles of a Presidents in the United States including the first role is Chief of State, the second one is Chief Executive, the third one is Commander-in-Chief, the fourth one is Chief Diplomat, and the last one is Chief Legislator. Chief of State and Chief Executive were born under the establishment of the Constitution. These two roles give the President the power to protect three pillars of the Constitution included Popular Sovereignty, Rule of Law, and Tolerance. Even though Congress and the president are pretty much evenly split (49% Congress & 51% the president) with their powers, the president holds powers that Congress does not. He is the Chief Diplomat and the Commander in Chief. The president also holds an inherent power with executive orders. Executive orders give the president the ability to make some policies without the approval of Congress. Executive orders can be used to force Congress into making foreign policy by the president, through treaties.
The president has the power to send troops anywhere at any time. Also, the president also holds responsibility of secrecy when it comes to holding confidential information, whether it be about the military or national security, etc. Furthermore, the president is an influencer of public opinion. He can easily sway public opinion through reciting speeches or making propaganda. Public opinion of this nature can even run worldwide.
One hundred years ago nobody heard about the news or current events from Facebook or the newest tweet. Until fairly recently the most up to date news had to be heard through the grapevine or read in a newspaper. Since the creation of the internet and the mass media that comes with it, information can now be spread all the way across the world in the time it takes to hit the enter button on a computer or phone and upload it to the internet. Some people think that this is a bad thing because so many things that are uploaded can be either false information or simply information that is misleading and could teach individuals the wrong thing. Within the United States system of government, the President holds great power and much responsibility to ensure a safe and efficiently run country. However, the president does not govern the country alone, but according to the Constitution, works in conjunction with the legislative and judicial branches of government to create policy. As a president enters into office, he brings a desire to pursue and influence policy which requires a partnership with Congress of compromise and cooperation as a way to initiate and change those policies. However, presidents have claimed an “inherent powers” in which they feel has been granted to them by the Constitution by Article II which allots them unchecked decision making.
We all had those moments when we all hated the congress for passing a bill that destroyed their dreams or the president for only who they were or what their stance on certain things, however have you ever thought who really calls the shots, the President or the Congress? Like sure, it would make sense if the President has most of the power, while Congress has some or vice versa. Although when it comes to certain things, the Congress has more power over the situation. For who has the most power, I think the Executive Branch has the most power. My first reason for why the President has the most power is because the President can approve and execute the laws that the Congress pass. (Section 2, Article 2). My second reason is that the President can also give a speech to the Congress on the “State of the Union” and recommending the laws that should’ve been passed.(Article 2, Section 3). My last and third reason on why the President has the most power is because he President appoints the heads of all the departments, appoints ambassadors, appoints Federal judges, and also appoints Supreme Court Justices.(Article 2, Section 2).
“The president 's power is felt all over the world.” No nation is so remote from the U.S. that they can avoid the repercussions of American diplomacy. The president can abuse their powers and it will affect the U.S as well as other countries that associate with us. “The formal powers as listed in the Constitution say little about a modern president 's real power.” Modern presidents have way more power than was is listed in the constitution, they do not have to follow the guidelines completely like past presidents would have had to.
In terms of informal he is allowed to make executive agreements which don't have to be ratified by the senate, he can make executive orders that are essentially the same as laws, except they only last as long as he is in office, he can create and use bureaucracy, he can issue signing statements, and propose legislation. His formal powers include, the power to veto any bill, command the armed forces, he is allowed to pardon, he can make treaties, and he can call congress to be in session. The people that make up the White House Staff are the president’s closest “friends”. He trusts them to give him advice and to keep his secrets.
Society expect to be constantly entertained; they have become so concerned with things such as who the latest star is dating, scandals, or dumb people doing rather idiotic things. Much of society have been consumed in their personal instant gratification and what makes them “happy”. When on an off chance that news does show things that are serious and impactful(not necessarily positive things that is happening in the world) people have become so numb that the best they could do is feel sympathetic and at worst continue on with their day. The other part of the problem is that those behind what is being published and shown on the news media have been absorbed in their avarice nature, whatever allows them to make as much profit they do. “Writing thousands of hours of coverage from what could have been summarized in a couple of minutes every few weeks, a new rhetorical strategy was developed, or-let’s be generous-evolved”(6), Saunders describes the new formula formed by mass news firms that would yield the most profit.
There have been many presidents overtime with different objectives for this country. The office has gained power as time goes on. Presidents have increased this power by establishing checks and balances, and the power given to Congress. There have been some good presidents that made our Country great, but then there’s also the opposite. The great made our office strong and fearless.
The media will pick and choose which topics to discuss according to the viewer’s ratings. The news media represent the news in a manner that will leave people coming back for more. They choose carefully what they want to report and by doing so they do not spread lies within the articles but what they choose not to tell the audience. The media shares what the people
But how much power does he actually have? The president has a number of specific powers. He can issue executive orders and he can extend pardons for federal crimes. He has the power to sign legislation into law, or veto bills enacted by Congress.
