Based on all the events that happened during President Taft’s presidency, the sinking of the RMS Titanic has got to be a good foundation for the final year of his presidency. Overall, the sinking of the Titanic validated the need for change within the US government branches, especially the executive and legislative branches. During Taft’s inaugural address, he pointed to everything that was wrong with the government and each year, he would present a Senate of the Union address to Congress, where he would address what still had to be done to reform the government. The Titanic sinking affected the legislative branch of the government; this was known as The American Inquiry. The American Inquiry was a series of hearings after President Taft ordered an investigation to take place on the Titanic tragedy. The major problem that led to this investigation was the “All Safe” messages that was sent to families and US officials indicating that the survivors had been rescued by three different ships and were headed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada – this information was false. Due to conflicting messages, the US Navy and President tried to reach out to the Carpathia through wireless radio, only to have their messages ignored. The President ordered US Navy ships to intercept the rescue ships. After the rescue ships docked in New York, the Senate Resolution 283 was written. This resolution gave a subcommittee of Congress “the legal power to obtain the people needed to be sworn, to create and serve summons, and to take testimony or affidavits.” The hearings took place from April 19 through May 25, 1912 and questioned some surviving passengers and the crew members from the Titanic and the Carpathia.
