Presidio San Antonio de Bexar was founded in 1718. It was founded by Martin de Alarcon. It was called the center of Spanish defense in western Texas. It was built to defend the San Antonio missions.It consisted of one Adobe building and brush huts that the solders lived in.It was located near the San Antonio Valero Mission. It was soon relocated across the river from the mission. Since Presidio San Antonio de Bexar was located so close to the Rio Grande and organized missions nearby it did better than most of the other presidios. A bible verse would be “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13 because it was hard work building and keeping up with a Presidio and God strengthened them. Pedro de Rivera made a report telling that 45 soldiers were at Presidio San Antonio De Bexar and there were nine on mission guard and escort duty. The plans were never started. Another group was sent called the second flying company of San Carlos de Perras to reinforce San Antonio de bexar defenses. Manuel Antonio Cordero used his power as governor to start the construction of a stockade along the limits of the city and wanted to built a permanent quarters for the troops , a better stockade around de Bexar and a fort. His plans weren't completed for some reason. Soldiers were stationed near the Alamo in 1806 because it ceased to function as a mission and became chief building for the military. That was important because it converted it from just a mission to military defense.
