One literary device Austen uses is foreshadowing. (Chapter 9) Willoughby helps Marianne back to the house after she sprains her ankle from running in the rain. "Willoughby then departed to make himself still more interesting in the midst of a heavy rain." His departure into the rain makes him a dark mysterious character, despite how charming he may seem. This foreshadows the discovery of his untrustworthiness and the pain he will give Marianne. Another literary device used is allusion. This literary device is used after Willoughby leaves to London. (Chapter 16) "We never finished 'Hamlet.' Marianne: Our dear Willoughby went away before we could get through it." This allusion is interesting because in the play Ophelia is driven insane
