Tone and word choice are major key factors for getting readers a full and vivid experience of what you’re trying to tell them. In “The Devil’s Thumb”, Krakauer chooses to utilize downsizing, depressing words and phrases in his writing like, “Beyond shame”, “self-pity”, “felt so alone”, “abandoned”, “vulnerable”, etc. His word choice overall gives a bitter tone to the story. He uses these words to give a more vivid, detailed description of how he was truly feeling at that very moment. While stuck in a snow storm, sitting in a dug out hole, he thought, “Beyond shame, I cradled my head in my arms and embarked on an orgy of self-pity.”

From this text we can infer that the author is most likely from hispanic descent as she is speaking spanish a lot of the time throughout the text. This text mainly speaks about the discrimination many Mexican-Americans suffer because they are spanish speaking.
No Nickels or Dimes To Spare In the book, Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich writes the story, “Serving in Florida.” She describes her experience living as an undercover waitress when in reality she’s a journalist for culture and politics with a doctorate in biology. Ehrenreich experiences trying to survive on multiple low income jobs to understand what it is like to be in their shoes instead of being apart of the higher middle class.
In “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, the author uses diction like abstract diction and details by explaining what he exactly wants in life to demonstrate Walter and his dream. To begin, Hansberry uses diction to demonstrate Walter and his dream by using abstract diction. She does this by explaining how he will give Travis anything for his seventeenth birthday and that he will “hand you the world!” (2.2). This shows that he wants to make his sons life as good as possible.

Brian Doyle in his text Joyas Voladoras he uses vivid and clear imagery, repetition, comparison, syntax and effortless diction to show his purpose which is it does not matter the size of a heart but its ability to live life to its fullest and hopeful that each day will be good. In the first paragraph he repeats the words “ A hummingbird’s heart is,” this shows the reader how the hummingbird’s heart is. “ not soon” this is in the second paragraph and it describes the urgency of the want. “You” is repeated to show the timeline and how it is similar to the human life. “So much held in heart in a,” this is used to describe all the little precious moments at the end of our lives.
Jack Nguyen AP English 3 30, July 2015 Nickel and Dimed Rhetorical Strategies and Notes Thesis: Ehrenreich’s personal use of varied rhetorical strategies allowed her to divulge the working conditions and struggles of the poverty-stricken class to the readers in order to provoke them to realize that something has to be done about poverty.. First Body: What: Allusion Pg. 2, Logos Pg. 37. How & Effect: Ehrenreich uses these personal, rhetorical strategies based on her experiences as a low-wage worker in the poor working class. The effect is that Ehrenreich is able to show the readers the conditions in which the impoverished work in and the daily obstacles that they face in life; also there is an appeal to logic and a reference of a poverty idiom. Why: Ehrenreich is deliberately using these rhetorical strategies to incite the readers about the fact that changes need to be done to poverty because it is a detrimental thing to society.
Since Leda shows eccentric behaviors such as showering in bleach and only eating one piece of burnt toast, Leda is a robot. Leda and the story hinted that she was a robot when she was "walking across the cold tile, she stared straight ahead, avoiding the mirror, which would not have reflected a person back anyway" (1). Because of this small detail in the text, the reader could interpret what this means. This could be another way saying that she is inhuman without saying it directly. Another part of the story Leda showed strange, inhumane demeanor was when she was going to school.
In How to Tame a Wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua uses rhetoric and personal anecdotes to convey and persuade her argument that Latin Americans are forced to relinquish their cultural heritage, and to conform to white society. The evidence she provides comes in a variety of platforms, both literal and rhetorical. Rhetorical, being through emotional, logical, and credible appeals through her text. Literal being explicitly stated, without any further analysis necessary. When she utilises the modes of appeals, they are subtle within the texts, which leads the reader to analyse as they read.
Although people may think it is pathos because You might show emotion, it is logical that you greet someone when you meet them. Parents raise their children to not be rude or impolite. One time , i went with my mom to her friends house and I didn't say "hello" so my mom got mad at me. Ever since that they I always remembered to say "hello".
Several Sunday mornings ago, a local church had a missionary as a guest speaker, and his speech appealed to the congregation through his incorporation of ethos, logos, and pathos. The missionary began his speech by stating that he had originally planned to become a pastor after graduating from seminary, but after receiving his degree he felt led to use his skills to assist the less fortunate. He soon joined an organization and has spent the past eight years in Latin America helping others while teaching Christianity. In the previous statement, the missionary attempted to appeal to the congregation through ethos. He discussed seminary school and his missionary experience in order to establish credibility as a trustworthy man of God.
Elie wiesel once said, “ A strange and unnatural state in which the lines blur between light and darkness”. Elie Wiesel is a holocaust survivor. He gave a wonderful speech called “ The perils of indifference”. He delivered this speech at the white house in washington D.C hoping to encourage the audience to learn from the past. Elie wiesel builds an argument to persuade the people of the new generation that we can all learn and grow to be better in the new millennium.
Throughout the reading by Gloria Anzaldua, we as readers, get to view the way she lived and to relate with the text. Gloria was born in Rio Grande Valley of South Texas in 1942. When Gloria was at a young age, she was shamed and embarrassed for the way her voice sounded. Growing up, she was told, “If you want to be American, speak American, if you do not like it, go back to Mexico where you belong” (Anzaldua 2). When she was told this it made her very upset.
In the short story “Hills Like White Elephants,” by Ernest Hemingway, there is a relationship unfolding, a complex relationship difficult to understand. The relationship is revealed by a conversation between a man and a woman, a topic of conversation that people rarely discussed in the period that the story was set. After researching interpretations, it is consistently said “She is pregnant, and he wants her to have an abortion” (Weeks 76), to which I agree that this conversation is about abortion. With the man seemingly pushing the topic and the girl hesitant and questionable, it is unsure as to the result of their conversation. However, it is my belief that she chose to follow her heart and not get the abortion.
