The period in the 20th century created tension and conflict between Quebec and the rest of Canada. From the Conscription Crisis of 1917 to the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s and both referendums over Quebec's sovereignty in the 1980s and 1990s, and thus creating one of the most important and for me, one of the most interesting segments of Canadian history, also called Federalists versus Quebec nationalists. The following arguments will be made: during the period from 1917 through 1995, disputes concerning military service, national identity, political self-governance, cultural preservation, and the legal structures to which each of these groups provided the primary sources of conflict between Federalists and Quebec nationalists. The three issues that must be addressed in this context include the Conscription Crisis and the question of national identity, the Quiet Revolution and Quebec's urge for self-determination, and language policies and bilingualism. Understanding these lines of dispute is central to understanding, in general terms, the nature of the present complexity in the relationship between Quebec and Canada. It is rightly called the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s, which really marked a turning point moment in the struggle for political self-governance and greater control of its own affairs by Quebec. This period represented a very positive social, political, and economic change in Quebec, improvement in the province, and the will to be more independent within Canada. The Quiet Revolution was famous for the atheism of society, the growth of a welfare state, and the newer Quebecois nationalism, which was directed toward enhancing the unique identity and the saving of cultural heritage for the province.
