A princess is expected to portray many skills including leadership, modesty, and an elegant persona. Royalty has very high standards. If these rules are broken, the leader falls and the country is left in turmoil. Princess Diana of Wales lived an extraordinary life caring for her sons, helping others, and serving as Great Britain’s Ambassador with dignity, grace, and humility. The pressure of marriage haunted the growing prince. On February 24, 1981, Prince Charles’ and Lady Diana’s engagement was announced (Stone 18). To prepare for the wedding, Diana moved into a suite in Buckingham Palace. Although Diana was excited for her new title, she felt alone and anxious. Her love for Prince Charles encouraged her to go through with the marriage. More than 750 million viewers watched the ceremony on television, while 2,500 attended the wedding. Diana tied the knot and received the new title of “Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales” (Stone 21). The princess struggled with this drastic change and showed many signs of depression due to the overwhelming responsibility. “Diana made shallow cuts on herself in a suicide gesture meant as a cry for help,” written by Andrew Morton in her book, Diana: Her True Story (Stone 23). The queen encouraged a divorce for the couple which was official in July of 1996. Charles and Diana shared the custody of the two children. Prince Charles married his mistress soon after the divorce while popularity for the princess increased greatly. Diana commented jokingly in an interview about the split, “well there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded!” Diana was supported by many of her fans, while Charles was treated as a villain.
