Chapter 1: Basic Principals & Communication In chapter 1, it highlights several ways to communicate effectively, the ability to connect and get to know someone better without being awkward toward one another, and self- talk. In this chapter, I learned that self- talk is very important to me because it help me get over my shyness when doing public speaking. Ever since I became mature, I was very afraid of speaking to a large crowd. For example, I don’t really like to interact with anyone at all in school and that I like to sit by myself all the time; however, when it comes to school project or events I get nervous because I have to interact with so many people all at once. As this chapter processed, I learned that if I don’t get out of my comfort zone my choices are very narrowed and my life is boring; therefore, I decided to be more open and interact with everyone that I see and get involve in more school activities to meet new people. This chapter teaches me that everything comes with a price and that If I want more choices and option in life I must expand my comfort zone which require me to take a risk. The biggest part of this chapter that interest me to the point that I applied it to my daily life is ways to cope and reduce stress. Being a college student and working at the same time is very stressful for me especially when I have to work all day, but I also have homework that is due later that same night. I learned that thinking positive about the situation along with a positive outcome can help me reduce my stress levels. For example, I have to work all day today; however, I have this journal assignment from my writing class that is due later on that night. At this point, I’m so stress out to where I’m afraid that I won’t be able to finish in time because I get out at 9:30 p.m. and the assignment is due at 11:59 p.m. When I started the assignment at 10 I used internal strategies of comping stress and be very optimism about the situation which at the end help me reduce my stress levels and complete/ submit my homework in time.
