Prison Does Not Work: An Argumentative Analysis

I have chosen this topic because it has inspired me, as there is a lot of evidence and theories that show ‘prison works’ and it ‘does NOT work’. My evidence will show that in some cases the prison works for some offenders but does NOT work for others. This is because some of these people would only commit the crime to get into prison. Other offenders learn from their mistakes and take actions to not do it again. A lot of evidence shows that in some cases the prison works for some offenders. This is because offenders understand what they have done bad and know not to do it again. Some offenders have got punished for what they have done and prison has helped them with their depression and any other problems they could have. After spending a couple of months or years in prison offenders learn from their mistakes from the past and have got a lot of time to over think their action. Offenders that have NOT committed the violent crime such as rape, are more likely to rehabilitate quicker and not to re-offend anymore. “The proven re-offending rate for adult offenders released from custody in 2014 was 45.5%.” This shows that the re-offending two years ago, was a big issue, the statistics were only done for adult offenders. Therefore, there is a lot of teenagers re-offending and committing more violent crimes. I believe that prison is a good place to keep violent offenders, and not offenders who have committed the crime because they were desperate for food or medicine. Prison keeps the violent offenders away from the public, and the public feels safe. After releasing a non-violent offender from prison, people would believe that the offender has done something against the law, and it will be hard for the offender to find a work placement, as everyone would judge him or
